The name University of Malaya (UM) is linked to the historical name of the country, “Malaya.” The Carr-Saunders Commission played a pivotal role, and in its 1948 report recommending the establishment of the university, the commission emphasized its vision for the university as a “common center uniting different races, religions, and economic interests in a unified effort,” stressing that “the University of Malaya will inevitably realize that it is a university for Malaya.” During its first decade, the university witnessed remarkable and rapid growth, leading to the decision to divide it on January 15, 1959, into two autonomous divisions, one based in Singapore and the other in Kuala Lumpur. Later, specifically in 1960, the governments of the two regions expressed their desire to transform these two divisions into national universities. This was followed by the issuance of the necessary legislation in 1961, paving the way for the establishment of the University of Malaya (UM) in its current form in Kuala Lumpur on January 1, 1962.

Airport reception
